However I get a type mismatch error. Why? class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { var optional = new StringOption(); Console.WriteLine(optional.Value); } } public class StringOption { private readonly string _value; public string Value { get { return _value; } } public StringOption(string value) { _value = value; } public static implicit operator StringOption(string value) { return new StringOption(value); } } The result of the code above is: System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.String' to type 'System.StringOption'. I'm using.Net 4.6.1. A: The problem is that the constructor of StringOption initializes _value and the static method just returns the same. And because there's only one possible way to initialise _value, the static method can return just the same variable as the constructor. But the type of _value at the declaration of the static method is still string. I think what you want to do is to create a new StringOption and return this. Also the implicit conversion from string to string option should not be a static method; this could make type inference fail again (the compiler will now do string op string option). Edit: Or maybe there is a static constructor in StringOption that initialises _value?
